Benton posted a seventh place finish in his first Big Ten Championship appearance. He tallied a pair of major decisions in going 2-2 for the tournament and running his season mark to 19-10. Benton came of a planned redshirt season at the National Duals for Penn State and quickly made his presence felt posting a 4-2 record in the event. He opened his dual meet career with a 7-5 suddend death victory over then No. 7 ranked Rodney Jones of Oklahoma and then challenged then No.4 ranked Chad Kraft before falling 3-2. Benton challenged 158 pounder John Lange for the starting spot at 150 before falling in a best out of three in the wrestle offs. He made impressive runs at the East Stroudsburg Open (4th) and Wilkes Open (2nd) in early season tournaments. Benton entered the dual lineup after injuries in the middle of the Penn State lineup opened the door and he went on to post a 10-4 dual record. Five of his last six losses have come against opponents ranked in the top seven. He has posted six major decisions and one match termination on the year. He enters his first NCAA tournament with the experience of having banged heads with 1995 NCAA 142 pound champion John Hughes in the Penn State wrestling room.
