Hunter was impressive in his first Big Ten Championship appearance as he posted a 5-1 record and claimed third place. He knocked of No. 2 seed Jessie Whitmer of Iowa 9-8 in the third place match to run his season record to 28-7. Hunter was rewarded for his performance by being named the Big Ten Freshman-of-the-Year. A starter for Penn State all season at 118 pounds, Hunter posted an 11-5 dual meet mark and racked up six falls and two major decisions. All of his losses on the season have come to an opponent ranked in the top ten at one point during the season, including four in the top five, and all have come by three points or less. He has won 13 of his last 14 matches on the season. Hunter claimed early season tournament titles at the East Stroudsburg and Penn State opens and took second at the Mat Town Tournament. A four-time Pennsylvania state champion, Hunter was a three-time member of the Asics Tiger All-America first team and captured the 1996 Espoir National Freestyle title at 114.5 pounds.
