Biography
One of the NCAA's most dominating wrestlers, McCoy cruised to his third Big Ten Title in 1997 posting a 4-0 record and a pair of major decisions. He ran his season mark to 36-0 and has now won 126 of his last 127 bouts, with his last loss coming in the 1995 NCAA Championship semifinals 4-3 to Justin Greenlee of Northern Iowa. The 1994 NCAA heavyweight champion completed his third straight undefeated dual meet season this year as he posted a 20-0 dual meet mark and ran his dual meet win streak to 58 matches. A finalist for W.I.N. Magazine's Hodge Award as the collegiate wrestler of the year, McCoy has posted 11 falls, 10 major decisions and three technical falls on the year while facing the nations toughest competition. He has knocked off 12 ranked opponents on the year, including all those currently ranked in the top four, as he has tightened his grasp on the No. 1 ranking throughout the year. He posted a 65-2 takedown advantage in dual meet action and accumulated over 30 minutes in riding time advantage. He was named the "Outstanding Wrestler" in three tournaments on the year, including the National Duals, and has claimed three tournament titles. He currently owns the Penn State career fall record with 34 and stands second in victories (145) and dual meet wins (69). McCoy redshirted last season to pursue a spot on the U.S. Olympic team. He fell just short of that goal but won the South Regional in Olympic Qualifying and pushed eventual Olympic champion Kurt Angle to a 0-0 referee's decision before losing in the finals of the U.S. Freestyle Open. He owns the fourth longest winning streak in NCAA history (80) and has been a major player on the national and international scene since winning the University National and Pan American Freestyle Championships in 1993. One of the most popular and recognizable athletes on the the Penn State campus, McCoy is serving his second term as president of the Student Athlete Advisory Board and is an accomplished cello player.
