Senior co-captain Brad Fenske had his second straight outstanding season for an Army team that finished the 1996-97 season 8-6 in duals and placed 7th at the EIWA Championships. Fenske, ranked second in the EIWA and 11th nationally at 142, broke the Army career victory record on Jan. 25 with his 116th career win. He has since gone on to boost that total to 123, following his most recent competition -- a second-place finish at the EIWA Championships on March 7-8. His 7-5 loss to Pennsylvania's Brett Matter in the 142-pound title bout snapped a 16-match winning streak and marked his first setback in nine outings since moving down from 150 to 142 pounds. In 1995-96, Fenske set an Army record with 42 wins, including a pair at the NCAA Championships in Minneapolis. At 38-8 this season, he is nearing that total once again. In addition to his Army victory records, his 12 pins both this year and last are tied for the fourth-highest single-season total in Academy history, and his 33 career falls rank tied for second in Army annals. The 1996 recipient of the Mike Natvig Award as Army's top wrestler, Fenske has placed in six tournaments this season, including wins at the Keystone Classic and the All-Academy Championships. Upon graduation, he will be commissioned into the Military Intellegence Branch of the U.S. Army, where he would be stationed in Germany.
